Camp-goers guide to taking care of braces
Campers should keep up the same oral hygiene routine at camp that they use at home. At camp, children should still be brushing well, flossing at least once a day, and wearing a retainer if they have one. If your child will be out hiking and won’t have access to running water or their orthodontic gear at some point during their adventure, don’t worry! Even when they can’t follow their usual regimen, your child can still keep their teeth healthy.
Drinking lots of water at snack times and during meals can help flush away cavity-causing food fragments. Summer camp is a place for adventure, but your child should not be adventuring into forbidden foods! Avoiding sugary drinks and snacks that aren’t braces-friendly will prevent tooth decay and protect your child’s appliances. Even if your child can’t bring all of their orthodontic equipment with them during activities, bringing along some floss can help them quickly get rid of food particles in their braces.
To prevent injuries to the teeth and mouth, your child should always wear their mouthguard during sports or high-intensity activities. Orthodontic emergencies are no fun, especially at camp. By following these tips, your child is sure to be all smiles wherever their summer takes them!
